They are injection molded of Hytrel (really good stuff) and hold two drumsticks securely.
Crabbies have a slotted tail and install without tools by slipping their tail past a drum lug which settles firmly into a hole in their back side.
Crabbies are convenient to use and several may be used on a single drum.
